Currently my wife and I are studying Colossians together and I wrote this poem based on what we studied in chapters 1 & 2.  I find it hard to read Colossians without desiring to praise Christ and worship Him.  He is sufficient for all of our needs and able to fulfill our hearts desire.  This poem is a weak expession of my heart to worship and praise Christ because of the truth present about Him in verses 15-22 of chapter 1

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by [6] him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

21 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him,

From everlasting to everlasting
Your name is to be praised
For there is no end to your reign
And history is racing to the day
Where is name is glorious to all.

You were with God at the beginning
And all things were created by you and through you,
You are preeminent over all,
In you alone the fullness of God dwells.

God’s holiness is made known to sinful man by you.
You clothed yourself in dust and took on the form of man
So that you could be the one that God fulfills His covenant through
By returning to dust and rising again
Making the way to known for all who claim your grace.

I was alienated from God and not allowed to come near,
But through the blood of the cross you bore for me
I am now reconciled to God with no fear of His wrath
But am in perfect peace because God is always with me.

Two For Tuesday

Being on vacation I figure this is the perfect opportunity to post two poems!  These are two new poems that I wrote as I was studying Genesis.  Genesis 15:1 is my favorite verse in the Bible and after I wrote the first poem I felt this conviction to write a prayer as I earnestly desire for my heart to believe the promise contained in this verse.

Genesis 15:1 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.”

Oh God, my God, Lord and Savior
I find myself humbled and in awe
That I get to call myself your child.
Jesus died on the cross for my sins
So that righteousness can be accounted to me.

Without Christ righteousness I have nothing.
You are the only reward my life contains.
My defense against the troubles of this world
Comes from you as my shield and strong tower.
I have no cause you fear for your Spirit is in me.

Why do I get the privilege to call you Father?
I was your enemy and your brought me close to you.
You have lavished grace upon grace on me
By giving me a new hear that desires to trust and obey,
So no matter my circumstances my faith is in you
As I desire to please you with my whole heart.

Romans 8:17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

Faithful Heavenly Father,
I come asking you to grant me your Spirit
So that I can have a Godward perspective.
I am so prone to sin.
I know my dependency to look to self
And be enticed by this world.
I come aware of need and dependency on you.
Give me eyes that look upward
So that I can be continually reminded
Of my inheritance, Heaven,
A life spent in eternity with Jesus.
Engrave on my heart that nothing is better than Jesus
Make my desire be to commune with Him always.
Increase my strength in growing to be like Him.
I am forever grateful for the calling you have given to me.
Please help me to live life worthy of the calling.

Use Me

I am on vacation right now, so that means that I actually have time to catch up on posting some of my poetry. Continuing in the Acts series I am hitting rewind and posting a poem based on Acts 2. I love the disciples availability to be used God and their dependence on the Spirit. This poem is about my desire to be used for God’s kingdom and how I am aware of my need of God’s help.

The Kingdom of God is at hand
And I want to be used to prepare the way,
But I know that on my own
I have nothing good to contribute.

If I am to be available
I must seek to decrease,
And put to death pride and self sufficiency
So that God can increase and His Spirit can abound in me.
Jesus did not come with an attitude of being full of Himself,
But sought to be full of God
So that He could magnify God.

Make me an empty vessel for your purposes
Let there be no more of me left
Because I want to be filled by your Spirit,
So I can be strengthened by your glorious power
To make your name and glory known.

I wrote this poem while meditating on Acts 3 and the sermon that Peter gave. It’s neat to see the apostle’s excitement and love for Jesus. I pray that the Holy Spirit can increase in my life and effect me in this way!

Jesus is the name above all names.
He is the author of all life,
The holy and righteous One.
His name, by faith, empowers me for all things.

He has done for me than I could ever ask.
I am undeserving because I murdered Him,
We have all nailed Jesus to the cross,
Praise be to God that we are not saved by works, but by grace.

The shed blood of Jesus blots out my sin
So I can turn from wickedness
And come to His presence
Where my soul can find refreshment
Allowing me to be a blessing to others.
