“I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.” Isaiah 43:25

This is a poem based on Isaiah 43:25.  It is such a rich verse and I wanted to flesh out the truth that God is speaking in His Word.   It truly is humblign to think about the greatness and majesty of God and although he doesn’t need us, He still sent His to die for us so that He can be in relationship with us.  I can give Him nothing, but He gave everything for me.  The cross has made known to me and unimaginable grace and mercy because of God’s love.

I, I am he that created the heavens and earth,
With a word I spoke all things into existence.
All of creation is for my purposes and glory.

You were made in the womb by  me
And are sustained by my righteous right hand,
Your life is nothing but a breath.

I, I am he whose Son came to die for the sins of many.
By his blood your transgressions are blotted out,
Because you believe in your heart Christ is Lord
And are united with him by grace through faith.

You could do nothing to save yourself.
If your sin were counted it would reach to the sky.
You works are like filthy rags and could never satisfy my holiness.
Only through the cross is peace found between you and I,
So that you may draw near and commune with me.

I, I am he who washes you clean and makes you new,
Giving you freedom from condemnation
With a promise to remember your sins no more.

Merry Christmas

Luke 2:14 “Glory to God in the highest.”

the poem that I wrote for Christmas today is based on Psalm 57 and Psalm 60 and the glorious one that came on Christmas morning.  As I was reading Psalm 57 I loved how it spoke so much about God’s attributes and in Christ we see all of those attributes.  Psalm 59 closes with the following verses and I knew I wanted to write a poem based on these verses and so God used these two Psalms to speak this poem to my heart

16 But I will sing of your strength;
I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning.
For you have been to me a fortress
and a refuge in the day of my distress.
17 O my Strength, I will sing praises to you,
for you, O God, are my fortress,
the God who shows me steadfast love.

Christmas poem

Little one in a manger, come from Heaven above,
I will sing and make melody to you
For you are the glorious One
And your glory is over all the earth.

A helpless babe is the One
Who gives strength to all,
I will sing of your strength
For you are the mighty one
That saves sinners.

High and exalted One that rules over all
You came down from Heaven
To proclaim the Father’s grace and mercy.
I will sing aloud of your steadfast love,
Be exalted, O Savior, above the Heavens.

Crucified and risen Lord of creation,
You have defeated sin and death,
In you I find life and joy.
Despite my weaknesses your purposes
Are being fulfilled in me
O my strength, I will sing praises to you.

For any of those struggling to get into the Christmas mood here are a couple of videos to help!

The first video really hits its stride at the 59 second mark. After that, be prepared for total sensory overload

This second video has the true signs of a great you tube video, when one of the guys at the end makes a comment about hoping this doesn’t go online.  Oh, little does he know…

My friend Jonah once said that Christmas would really be devoid of meaning if wasn’t for the death and resurrection of Jesus.  That is so true, the most important thing we can have is not a spirit of giving, but a living a life on a gospel trajectory.  Here is a link to a wonderful message and convicting message on aligning our lives with the Gospel.  Matt More at Cornerstone Simi on Gospel Trajectory

Two Years

Earlier this week my beautiful wife and I went away to celebrate our two year anniversary.  You can read more about that trip at her blog.  I know I am late with this, but I wrote her poem as a meager attempt to put into words my heart for her.  I truly consider myself the most blessed man in the world because of her.

Two years of blessings beyond belief,
That I would get to be your husband
And spend every morning waking up next to you.
Each day I find myself more thankful
As I grow in anticipation for our future ahead.

You are my best friend,
The one God picked out for me.
I am confident that by God’s grace,
You will be a godly mother to our children.

Because of you, I am more aware of God’s grace.
I see God’s grace in how you care for me and our home.
Your love, faithfulness and trust mean more to me than you know.

The Holy Spirit shines through you,
As you bear fruit for Him
And cultivate the attributes and characteristic of a godly wife and mother.

Parting Words

I was reading Acts 20 the other day and this passage has Paul’s parting words to the elders in Ephesus.  A verse that has always stuck out to me about small group leadership is verse 20 where Paul tells the elders “Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, [3] which he obtained with his own blood.”  It’s one of those reminders that the people that are in our care aren’t just “anybody”, but they are people that Christ has shed his blood for me.  That is something that totally reorients my view on others, as I remember their worth to God.  The whole passage is very rich, so I decided to take Paul’s parting words and put them into a poem.

Listen to the spirit and live as He instructs.
Faithfully speak the words He lays on your heart.
Testify to all repentance toward God
And faith in the risen Lord Jesus Christ.

Do not fear trials and afflictions,
But instead walk in the fear of the Lord
Know that this life is of no value
In comparison to the one that awaits
Those who finish the course by grace.

Keep your eyes focused on the cross,
Where your soul and those under your care,
Were bought with Christ precious blood,
So you can live lives free from for your God’s glory.

Attacks are certain to come,
Both from within and without,
But hide in the shadow of the cross
Where our victory is already won.

This world is passing, so invest in the eternal;
Him for everlasting to everlasting and the Word of His grace,
Which will give you an inheritance better than material possessions.
Help those who are weak and needy,
So that you may store up treasures in Heaven.

The Source of My Joy

Earlier this week I was reading Psalm 51 for my quiet time and a theme that kept popping out to me is how David found joy in his salvation.  The context is really neat because it is a psalm of repentance and David is totally unaware of how undeserving he is for God to be in relationship.  This time of brokenness made David prize his salvation even more.  I decided to write a poem about this psalm and included it below.

Bring me back to you,
The source of my joy.
You are the one who washes me clean
And makes me new from within.

I have been wretched and vile from birth,
With sin perpetually in every inch of my being.
I do not deserve my relationship with,
But you are a God of steadfast and unfailing love
Who shows abundant mercy through the cross
Where my iniquities are blotted out.

Jesus, the innocent one,
Was made guilty so I can be free.
I will sing of His praises
and teach transgressors His word
Because you have made me glad
And turned my mourning into dancing.

Encouragement from Barnabas

“When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad, and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose,” Acts 11:23

As I was communing with God this morning, my Bible reading plan had me read the above passage in Acts.  the context is Barnabas coming to Antioch and encouraging the new believers there.  Barnabas exhorts them to two things, be faithfulness and have a steadfast purpose.  I think it’s easy have so many things to want to encourage people with or almost have a do-list, such as quiet times, commitment to church etc.  When Barnabas speaks to the church, he is succint and right on the mark.  Based on that verse I wanted to write a poem based on his exhortation.

Before thefoundations of the world
God has declaired His faithfulness to you
By electing you on the basis of grace.

At the fullness of time Jesus was sent
To live a perfect life and die for your sins.
In light of His faithfulness and love
Live your life faithfully to God and others.

Let your life be marked by devotion to the cross.
Make your purpose to see Christ glorified in all you do.
Seek to have every step be led by the Spirit
As you are continually filled by Him.
Have your passion be to proclaim the greatness of Jesus name and renown.
