God’s Purpose in Trials

In Exodus 14 God reveals three reasons why trials come into the lives of His choosen people

  1. He wants all the world to know His glory
  2. To display His character
  3. To reveal our hearts

God is jealous God and there is no cost to great for Him to accomplish His purpose of being glorified by His people.  God’s plan to harden Pharaoh’s heart led Pharaoh to take his people into the sea, to their certain doom.  In God’s wisdom, He knew pharaoh would do this (14:17-18).  Pharaoh was a responsible individual and was not coerced or forced into his actions.  God is glorious and this is a truth He has gone to great lengths to communicate, from allowing Pharaoh and his men to perish in the Red Sea to offering up His only Son on the cross for the sins of all.  God’s purpose for each individual is to glorify Him, let us pray that we glorify Him like the Israelites and not like the Egyptians.

We see a sovereign God at work in this chapter.  Moses sings in Exodus 15 that God is glorious in power (15:6).  He is a God who is awesome in glorious deeds and doing wonder (15:11).  He controls the winds and effortlessly drives the sea back so that the Israelites can pass through (14:21-22).  There is no sign of worry or fear for the Israelites when they are aware of God at work.  God’s power extends past nature man made things as we see him clogging the Egyptian chariots (14:25).  Our best made inventions cannot prevent God’s plan.  The Egyptians were in a state of panic because they chariots and not the Lord.

When the Israelites see the egyptians their immediate reaction is that of unbelief.  God has revealed in their hearts that they had a larger view of the Egyptians instead of Him.  Instead of affirming truth about God, they complained and were more aware of their circumstances of who God is (14:10-12).  Moses on the other hand reminded the people of truth, he gave them advice that we can eve use today.  There is no place for fear, but to stand firm on who God is.  To look to salvation and the hope we have in God.  Let our hearts be still because God is fighting for us and still at work (14:13-14).  The final product of this trial is that the people believed and feared the Lord (14:31).
