Sobered By The Road Ahead

Just read a quote in Doc Gooden’s memoir that strikes me about what fighting pornography addiction is like:

Even the greatest treatment facility just gives you the tools. There is no magic. There is no instant cure. You have to accept your powerlessness and work every day at recovery.

He is talking about recovery from cocaine addiction, but what he said makes me think about misconceptions about the gospel and healing from sexual sin.  In one sense I’ve been cleansed and made pure, but there is still a battle.  In the past I have let up in the battle and pretended like it isn’t there and shortly after I make that decision I have given in.  I have not stumbled since everything came to the light earlier this month, but I know I have not been cured.  The difference between the battle versus in the past is that I know it is an every day working at recovery.  In the past I would be aware of my powerlessness and give in when the desire comes for an extended period of time, but now when the thought of pornography comes to mind I remember where the power lies for victory

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. (Colossians 3:1-3 ESV)

The gospel provides tools at my disposal.  They are not magic tools, but I must actively be engaged in the fight.  Actively being engaged for my purity looks like:

Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed. (Hebrews 12:12-13 ESV)

It is a fight to the death

Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming. (Colossians 3:5-6 ESV)

That is only won by using the sword of the Spirit

How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. (Psalm 119:9 ESV)

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. (Colossians 3:16 ESV)
